Rollercoaster of LOLwut: Elemental T10 bonuses

It’s been fun times for us elementals as of late regarding our set bonuses. First, our T9 4 piece was nerfed from a flat 20% damage increase on Lava Burst to becoming a DOT that ticks for 10% of the damage the LvB did. Apparently some shaman were able to “abuse” this bonus to their advantage in pvp…which I don’t see how, since with all of my pvp gear equipped I can just barely get over the 900 resil hump (I’m actually at 836 now since I’m using the Ashen Verdict rep ring).

Then T10 bonuses were announced, and we were like…wat?

2 pc – Reduce CD on EM by 2 seconds per every LB cast
4 pc – Reduce CD on LvB by 1.5 seconds

Upon some raiding elementals obtaining T10 2 piece, they found an irritating bug with it in which if EM is used in a random heroic with T10 2 piece equipped, it would reset the CD on EM to 7 DAYS. After the initial dust of the “wtf Blizz?” responses settles, you can see how it would get missed: PTR only involves 2 servers, not a giant cluster of servers being pooled together (although yes, technically there could be a server farm dedicated just for PTR use). I have not seen any posts that this bug has been fixed, so I presume it’s still a work in progress…here’s hoping it’s resolved soon, though.

Then there’s the 4 piece, which when you think about it, is rather counter-intuitive when coupled with the 2 piece. Lower CD on LvB means more LvB casts in lieu of LB casts, the latter of which would lower EM cooldown by 2 seconds per casts…durr! Blizzard realized this, coupled with the theorycraft that showed the bonus on it’s own merit being worth less DPS than expected (T8 set bonuses still eat any other shaman set alive so far) and decided to revamp the bonus. The result:

4 pc 2.0 – Lava Burst would not require the Flame Shock DOT on the target in order to crit. Also reduces LvB CD by 1.5 seconds.

First reaction to that one is that it would reward poor play in pve: Oh noes, I let FS drop off the tar-LOL NVM 4 PC T10 LOLOL LVB/LB MACRO 4 GRATE JUSTICE! Initially I missed the pvp implications of such a bonus…this one would put our 4 piece in the same boat as T9; in fact, it would be insanely OP for pvp. 1200 resil? No problem.

Today, we have Blizz stating they aren’t thrilled with the 4 piece, and therefore have a new bonus proposed:

4 pc 3.0 – The Shaman Tier 10 bonus has been redesigned and will no longer reduce the cooldown of Lava Burst or enable Lava Burst to be guaranteed to critical strike without Flame Shock present. Instead successful Lava Burst casts now increase the duration of Flame Shock on the target by 6 seconds.

Basically 2 piece T9 on crack. Were I not occupied at work while typing this up, I’d try my hand at figuring out how much of a dps increase (if any) this version of the bonus would equate to. I don’t expect it to trump T8 or T9 4 piece. This bonus isn’t set in stone, though, so it very well may change yet again. We’ll see.

Couple this set bonus fiasco with our continued struggle to squeeze out any semblance of respectable DPS…yeah, things aren’t so rosy right now. I don’t expect any major changes until 4.0/Cataclysm, though.

Not sure what you consider respectable DPS but in T9.25 I was pulling 9k+ on fights like jaraxxus and 6-8 on most regular movement fights. Shamans aren’t as bad as people think, just the players.
